Sheikh Jibril Mustofa
Keeper of Atiq Mosque — imam, muezzin, and qadi for over ninety years, and one of the living memories through which the mosque's history survives.
Arrival in Gondar
Among all the names woven through the history of Atiq Mosque in Gondar, few loom as large as that of Sheikh Jibril Mustofa. He is remembered not simply as one leader among many, but as the figure whose life work came to define an entire era of the mosque's story — a man whose service stretched across decades and whose memory became, quite literally, one of the two primary sources from which this history was first written down.
Sheikh Jibril Mustofa was not born in Gondar. According to the accounts passed down by the mosque's community, he arrived in the city from abroad, making his way to Ethiopia by way of Sudan, during the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie. This route — through Sudan and into northern Ethiopia — was a well-worn path for Islamic scholars of that era, the same route an earlier generation, including Haji Ali Gondar, had traveled decades before him, drawn by Gondar's long-standing reputation as a center of Muslim community life. Scholars moving along this corridor carried with them connections to teachers and students across a wider Islamic world stretching from the Nile Valley into the Horn of Africa. The specific details of his early life and training before he reached Gondar were not recorded by those who first told his story, but his arrival should be understood as part of that larger movement of knowledge and faith.
Three Roles, One Lifetime of Service
What sets Sheikh Jibril Mustofa apart is not a single achievement but the sheer breadth and duration of his service. He filled three distinct roles at once: he was the mosque's aseggaj, leading the congregation in the five daily prayers; he was the one who made the adhan, the call to prayer; and he served as qadi, the recognized religious and communal leader guiding the Muslim population of the area in matters of faith and daily life. In many mosque communities these functions are divided among two or three men. That he held all three at once, for so long, speaks to the trust the community placed in him and the depth of his learning.
Leading prayer meant standing before the congregation five times a day, year after year — a quiet devotion that shaped the daily rhythm of the neighborhood. Calling the adhan meant his voice marked time for the community: the signal that told farmers to leave their fields and households to pause their work. Serving as qadi meant families came to him to settle disputes and seek guidance according to Islamic teaching, placing him at the center of community life well beyond ritual alone.
A Life of Extraordinary Length
Perhaps the most striking detail preserved about him is his age: he lived to be over ninety years old, continuing his service almost up to the time this history was recorded. In a community where oral memory is the primary vessel for history, a leader who serves for so many decades becomes a living archive. Generations who might otherwise have had no connection to one another were connected through him — children of families he guided as a young imam grew old under his continued leadership, and their own children knew him as an elder statesman of the faith. It is this bridging of generations that made him, alongside the elder Ato Fentie Getahun, one of the two central sources whose testimony forms the backbone of the mosque's recorded history.
Rebuilding the Mosque
His leadership was not confined to spiritual matters. Toward the end of Haile Selassie's reign, he stood at the center of a group of respected elders — Aman Desta, Engidaw Bishir, Getahun Desta, Ibrahim Desta, Abokir Fentie, and Mohammed Habib (Sheikh Lemdo) — who undertook a significant renovation of the mosque. Timber was brought from Amba Giorgis, and the structure was rebuilt part stone, part wood. This was no small undertaking for a community without outside resources, requiring organized labor, materials, and transport, all coordinated by leaders already carrying the mosque's daily spiritual life. That the renovation succeeded stands as a testament to the practical side of his leadership, too easily overshadowed by his religious title alone.
Legacy
Sheikh Jibril Mustofa was not the founder of Atiq Mosque — by his own community's account, the mosque already had a history stretching back before Emperor Tewodros II, long before his arrival. But for the better part of a century he was its steward: the man who called it to prayer, led its worship, judged its disputes, rebuilt its walls, and, at the very end, became the living memory through which much of that history survives. Few figures combine so many forms of service into a single lifetime — spiritual devotion, communal leadership, physical rebuilding, and living memory — and it is that combination that makes Sheikh Jibril Mustofa one of the most significant figures in the mosque's long history.
