A Light of Islamic Scholarship in Gondar's History
Among the great Islamic scholars who lived in Gondar during the mid-19th century was Sheikh Ali Musa Sherif, popularly known as Sheikh Ali Gondar. He was born in the former Wollo province and later moved to Gondar for work. It was during his time in the city that he came to be known by the name "Sheikh Ali Gondar."
He is remembered as a man of admirable character and deep religious knowledge. Sheikh Ali Gondar is widely recognized for his tireless efforts to help the Muslim community hold firmly to their faith and protect themselves from undue outside influence.
One thing that sets him apart is that he is credited with introducing the celebration of Mawlid (the birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) in Gondar. It is said that he would personally grind the grain needed for the celebration by hand, starting three months before the day of Mawlid arrived — a testament to the depth of his devotion to the occasion.
The legacy Sheikh Ali Gondar left behind — the mosque he built, the Mawlid tradition he began, and his lasting dedication to protecting his community — continues to live on in the memory of Gondar's Muslim community today.
📌 A Note on Heritage Recognition
It is worth noting that, unlike Gondar's royal castles (Fasil Ghebbi) which are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historic mosques of Gondar — including the site associated with Sheikh Ali Gondar — are not currently registered by UNESCO. They remain treasured as living community and spiritual heritage, preserved through local memory, tradition, and continued use.

Sheikh Ali Gondar's tomb is located within the mosque compound that bears his name in the Addis Alem neighborhood of Gondar. To this day, community members, students of knowledge, and visitors from various places come to visit the site, offer prayers, and reflect on his legacy of faith and service.

🕌 ሸህ አሊ ጎንደር: የጎንደር እስልምና ታሪክ ብርሃን
በ19ኛው ክፍለ ዘመን አጋማሽ ጎንደር ከተማ ውስጥ ከኖሩ ታላላቅ የእስልምና ምሁራን አንዱ ሸህ አሊ ሙሳ ሸሪፍ፣ በተለምዶ ሸህ አሊ ጎንደር በመባል ይታወቃሉ። ተወልደው ያደጉት በቀድሞው ወሎ ክፍለ ሀገር ሲሆን፣ ወደ ጎንደር ያመሩት በስራ ምክንያት ነበር። "ሸህ አሊ ጎንደር" የሚለውን ስያሜ ያገኙትም በጎንደር ቆይታቸው ወቅት ነው።
ከጎንደር ቀደምት፣ ከእስልምና እምነት ጋር በጥብቅ ከተሳሰሩ መንደሮች አንዱ "አዲስ ዓለም" ነው። ሸህ አሊ ጎንደር በዘመነ መሳፍንት መጨረሻ እና በአፄ ቴዎድሮስ ዘመን መባቻ አካባቢ በዚያ እንደኖሩ ይነገራል። እዚያው መንደር ውስጥ ራሳቸው ያስገነቡት መስጅድ እና የሚያርፉበት መካነ መቃብር ዛሬም ይገኛሉ።
በስነምግባራቸው የተመሰገኑ፣ በሐይማኖታዊ እውቀታቸው ደግሞ ሊቅ እንደነበሩ ይነገርላቸዋል። ሙስሊሙ ማህበረሰብ ሃይማኖቱን ጠብቆ እንዲኖር፣ ካልተገባ ውጫዊ ተጽዕኖ ራሱን እንዲከላከል ላደረጉት ከፍተኛ አስተዋጽኦ በስፋት ይታወሳሉ።
ልዩ ከሚያደርጓቸው ነገሮች አንዱ፣ የመውሊድ በዓል (የነብዩ ሙሐመድን የልደት ቀን) በጎንደር ማክበርን የጀመሩት እርሳቸው መሆናቸው ነው። ለበዓሉ ዝግጅት የሚያስፈልገውን እህል፣ የመውሊድ ቀን ከመድረሱ ሦስት ወራት አስቀድመው ራሳቸው በእጃቸው ይፈጩ እንደነበር ይተረካል - ይህም ለበዓሉ የነበራቸውን ጥልቅ ክብር ያሳያል።
ሸህ አሊ ጎንደር ትተውት ያለፉት ቅርስ - ያሳነጹት መስጅድ፣ የጀመሩት የመውሊድ ባህል፣ እና ለማህበረሰቡ የነበራቸው ጥበቃ - ዛሬም በጎንደር ሙስሊም ማህበረሰብ ትውስታ ውስጥ ህያው ሆኖ ይኖራል።
📌 ስለ ቅርስ እውቅና
የጎንደር ቤተ-መንግስት (ፋሲል ግቢ) በ UNESCO የዓለም ቅርስነት እንደተመዘገበው ሁሉ፣ የጎንደር ታሪካዊ መስጂዶች - ከሸህ አሊ ጎንደር ጋር የተያያዘውን ስፍራ ጨምሮ - በአሁኑ ወቅት በ UNESCO አልተመዘገቡም። ይሁን እንጂ በአካባቢው ማህበረሰብ ትውስታ፣ ትውፊት እና ተከታታይ አጠቃቀም አማካኝነት እንደ ህያው መንፈሳዊና ማህበረሰባዊ ቅርስ ተጠብቀው ይኖራሉ።
🪦 መካነ መቃብራቸው እና መጎብኘት
የሸህ አሊ ጎንደር መካነ መቃብር በስማቸው በተሰየመው በአዲስ ዓለም አካባቢ በሚገኘው መስጂድ ግቢ ውስጥ ይገኛል። እስከ ዛሬ ድረስ የማህበረሰብ አባላት፣ የእውቀት ፈላጊዎች እና ከተለያዩ ቦታዎች የሚመጡ ጎብኚዎች ስፍራውን በመጎብኘት፣ ዱዓ በማድረግ እና የእምነታቸውንና የአገልግሎታቸውን ቅርስ በማሰብ ይመላለሳሉ።
