Empowering Communities and Building Hope: The Journey of Bereka in Gondar

Office Location: Gondar Arada Wondemamach Building (ጎንደር አራዳ ወንድማማቾች ህንጻ)

Introduction and Foundation

The historic city of Gondar, rich in cultural legacy and architectural heritage, is also home to thousands of families, orphans, and vulnerable individuals facing significant socioeconomic challenges. In response to these pressing community needs, Bereka Charity and Development Association (በረካ የበጎ አድራጎት እና ልማት ማህበር) was established around 2011 E.C. as a non-profit, humanitarian institution. Rooted in compassion, integrity, and selflessness, Bereka Association has steadily grown into a cornerstone of community support across Gondar and surrounding areas in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia.

From providing educational resources to orphaned children and delivering life-saving food assistance during sacred observances, to supporting local public infrastructure and organizing blood donation campaigns, Bereka Charity and Development Association embodies the true spirit of grassroots philanthropy. Our office is centrally located at Gondar Arada Wondemamach Building, serving as an open hub for donors, volunteers, and community members.

Core Pillars and Vision

Bereka operates under the fundamental belief that sustainable community development begins with caring for the most vulnerable. Our operations are driven by four key pillars:

  • Educational Empowerment: Ensuring orphaned and low-income students receive quality education, scholastic materials, and holistic care.
  • Humanitarian & Food Relief: Distributing food supplies, seasonal aid, and emergency relief to households struggling with extreme poverty.
  • Health & Life-Saving Initiatives: Partnering with regional health institutions to organize voluntary blood donations and promote public well-being.
  • Community & Infrastructure Support: Collaborating with local kebele administrations to improve essential public services and local living conditions.

Major Direct Impact Initiatives and Projects

Educational Support for Orphans: Recognizing that education breaks the cycle of poverty, Bereka Association has prioritized educational assistance. In partnership with community institutions such as the Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Religious School under the Jamia Al-Kubeir Mosque administration in Gondar City, the association has financed, facilitated, and sustained academic opportunities for numerous orphans and economically disadvantaged students.

Seasonal Humanitarian Food Relief: During times of religious significance and economic strain, Bereka mobilizes extensive food distribution campaigns. During the holy month of Ramadan, the association organizes large-scale Iftar programs and distributes bulk food packages—containing staple grains, cooking oil, dates, and essential food items—to hundreds of vulnerable families across the Central Gondar Zone.

Local Neighborhood Development: Working directly with sub-city administrations, such as Azazo Sub-City Abajale Kebele 11, Bereka has sponsored neighborhood development programs, provided financial relief to displaced or low-income residents, and contributed to public utility repairs, earning deep trust among civic leaders and residents.

Voluntary Blood Donation Drives: Recognizing critical blood shortages at regional medical centers, the association routinely organizes voluntary blood donation drives in coordination with the Gondar Blood Bank Service and the Amhara Regional State Health Bureau, helping save countless lives in emergency rooms and maternity wards.

Institutional Recognition and Certificates

The transparent and impactful service rendered by Bereka is reflected in multiple official certificates of appreciation awarded by governmental and religious bodies:

  • Amhara Regional State Health Bureau & Gondar Blood Bank: Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding leadership and active participation in organizing voluntary blood donation programs.
  • Central Gondar Zone Islamic Affairs Council: Certificate of Honor and Gratitude (Megabit 2017 / Ramadan 1446 H) for extensive humanitarian contributions in preparing Iftar and relief programs.
  • Azazo Sub-City Abajale Kebele 11 Administration: Official Certificate of Recognition acknowledging unreserved financial, logistical, and developmental support to local low-income residents.
  • Gondar City Islamic Affairs Council & Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq School (2013 E.C.): Certificate of Appreciation for invaluable support in empowering orphans and students.
